Case Selection Process
This document describes the process by which I went about selecting and initiating the case study participants. It also describes a bit about each organization.
This describes the way I created an initial list of 24 social media outlets to examine for each of the participating five organizations. This method generated a grid of 24 outlets divided into five categories for examination.
Methods for the Inventory of Online Social Media
This described the ways that I collected data and analyzed each organization across a range of concerns, including the 24 online social media outlets generated in the early phase of the study, the website presence of each organization and each organization´s representation in the blogosphere.
This interview sought to build a baseline understanding of each organization, including its history and philosophy.
This interview established the baseline strategy and objectives for each organization´s use of social media (both on and offline) as well as the ways they manage their online communications. It also helped to 'fact check' my initial discoveries about the outlets and media that each organization uses (does not use).
The purpose of this study was to clarify a few concrete points of information about the participants and to provide them with the opportunity to comment on an initial characterization of their organizations according to some theories that have emerged as useful for understanding their activities, notable community of practice theory and theories about new venture creation.
